Psalm 1

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Proverbs 9

Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
2 She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.
3 She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
4 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
5 Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
6 Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
11 For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
12 If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

13 A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.
14 For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
15 To call passengers who go right on their ways:
16 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

  1. Many times sin is described in ways that sound beautiful and alluring. Here wisdom is the beautiful one. She plans out everything about her home to be welcoming and hospitable. She calls in the one who is simple to learn of her walk in the ways of truth.

  2. (verses 7-12) We see this in movies all the time: they try to tell the bad guy what to do and it does not turn out to be beneficial for the good guys. They are usually harmed all the more. The thing is, I have felt this kind of attitude in my heart. So many times when my mom or dad would tell me what was best, I would buck against it thinking I knew just as well. Has it really changed now? Do I love the one who reproves me? Verse 12 is so haunting: "if you scoff, you alone will bear it."

  3. Verses 13-18 are quite a contrast to verses 1-6. There are six action verbs describing what Wisdom does to prepare for those who would listen to her. Folly does hardly anything. The verbs are being verbs describing her. The actions she takes are to sit, take a seat, and call to the passers-by. She starts with the same call as Wisdom: "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here," but then she tries to drum up the pleasure of stealing and being sneaky. This sounds so much like society today trying to get everyone to depend on the government and think that you are owed everything.
