A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
2 The rich and poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all.
3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.
4 By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life.

25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
26 Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts.
27 If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.
29 Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
I know verse one is so often quoted, but it really is because it is a great verse. You cannot buy a good reputation no matter how much money you have. The only way to get it is by the day by day consistency of living a life for God's glory. Sometimes we can be distracted by thinking of the big things that we want to do in life. Many of them may even be very good things. It's great to have goals to shoot for, but when the Bible talks about life it usually points out the common every day things that each person should be doing consistently. James 1:26-27 tells us that true Christianity is to keep your tongue from saying things you ought not, caring for widows and orphans, and keeping unstained from the world. These things will also grow a good name for you and bring honor to God's name.
ReplyDeleteVerse 28 is interesting to think about. In your father's life, something happened that was important enough to set up a landmark to remember it. When you come along, it is not as important to you because you do not have the memory of the event. However, that is the very reason that he put it up. He wanted to be sure the Lord was thanked or the warning was remembered and heeded. Even when he is gone, we must not remove his remembrance. We don't have enough time in life to learn every lesson on our own. We must listen to our fathers (mothers, elders, etc.) and take the lessons they have learned to heart.
